The Magic Carpet
And there it was, in the back of a rug showroom in Tubac, Arizona.
Intrepid almost didn’t set foot in Old World Imports because it had already been a long day walking from shop to gallery searching for the first pieces of art for a new client. In the back room behind many piles of rugs and another décor this seemly the perfect rug sat inside an old wooden frame with glass creating an unnecessary glare. The only question was would it fit?

It was love at first sight for both Intrepid and the client. A few short weeks later the rug was brought up in its original frame to be hung on a wall seemly made to display it. The rug was duck taped into the frame that was discarded to really let the fibers and their texture shine. This amazing piece became the foundation for the entry area and living room o the home, including a custom dining room rug made to size by the team at Old World Imports.

Later we found out from an extremely friendly and knowledgeable gentleman at Mark Sublette that this Native American rug was made at about 7,000 ft in elevation near Crystal, New Mexico, where the winters were harsh. Trading in this area only took place during the fall, spring, and summer months.

The small squares at the tip of some of the patterns on the rug were meant to be circles but because of the weaving process, they come out in a more square shape. The crosses on the rug symbolize "spider woman" or the spiritual woman who taught the Navajo to weave. The border around the rug was added during this time period because settlers would not purchase rugs without borders. The beauty and history of this piece brings warmth and welcome into this modern southwest home.
