Recession Definition - Interior Design
Intrepid will rotate around the sun twice this October and many people have warned a tale of caution that Interior Design is the first thing out the window when people are faced with a recession. While recession affects each market sector differently, the field of interior design is very familiar with how a recession affects and defines our lives.
So how does a recession define design? One might be quick to point out minimalism, but it is not that simple. Here are some design changes in our forecast.
The Chrysler Building is an iconic example of Art Deco architecture and design.
Sudden changes from edgy to traditional. Before the great depression, interiors were in their Great Gatsby stage, with optimism in every detail. It is fitting that here we are again in the ’20s looking back at the Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Bauhaus design trends of the 1920s. Gleaming romantic metal accents were a must. We think of the Chrysler building and the ford model A. The American Art deco style celebrated the modernity of streamlined machine-made everyday items.
“A recession is defined by innovative and inspiring design. ”

The new streamlined look of mass-produced items pulled the United States out of the depression by enticing purchases solely based on design aesthetics. We think of Sears, Roebuck, and Company’s cold spot refrigerator, which we see reflected today in the popular Smeg refrigerators and appliances.

Intrepid is predicting a return to simple, livable, uplifting, and possibly a little nod to vintage design features. In the upcoming blogs, Intrepid plans to continue to examine and forecast the interior design that is currently defining this recession period.
